Sunparlour Players – April 5, 2014

An ACC North Fave returns!

Let’s welcome the warmth of spring with the return of the Sunparlour Players.

This band has been a hall favourite for quite some time. Here’s why - when we first started hosting shows and no one had ever heard of Avening and tickets were easy to come by – this band took a chance on our funny little hall in the cow pasture while other musicians just laughed at the thought of sold-out concerts in a hamlet of 30 people. We have been ardent fans and boosters of these guys ever since.

If you have seen SPPs you will know to get your tickets early, invite all your friends and be prepared for a night of music like no other.

For the rest of you – I know of late we have been booking some pretty big Can-con cats and that many of you are on this list because you are followers of those “famous” guys but let us tell you this duet will fill the hall with sounds more befitting of a 10-piece band with a jaw-dropping blend of the showmanship of Hawksley Workman, the hipness of Hayden and the bopping hooks of Joel Plaskett to create an Elliott Brood-like lid-hammering dance party. They may also do an AC/DC cover song worthy of some serious rural head banging.

Clearly our regard for this band goes beyond our normal acoustic amour – which is why we would love to see you there too.

Tickets are available $20 in advance online here
or by calling Sara at 705-466-9906 sara@creemore.com
$25 at the door

Doors open at 7pm
Show at 8
Food available to purchase from Men with Knives.
Cash bar
All Ages welcome.

Loss for Avening

sylviaAvening lost two wonderful women this week. We are saddened by the loss of Avening’s Baird and Big Heart Sylvia Gale.

Barb Fisher Curran – who, after moving from her Avening home all the way to Creemore lamented how she missed being in the “area” – will also be greatly missed.

Both of these women saw many an event at the hall – the hall which their families built and maintained as a cornerstone of the community. As we mourn the loss we are reminded of the importance of this place.

Sylvia and her father Bill Jordan at the Avening Hall in 1977.

Books, Beer & Dave Bidini Sunday, October 6

avening_ bidiniAvening residents Mark and Bill  - you know Bill, he’s the Mayor of Avening, and Mark too, he lives in the old park house – anyway they have been part of a guy’s book club for about a year and have been loving it. Now they want to share the love. They, along with the rest of their gang, will be hosting a book event for guys and GALS featuring their hockey-loving, guitar-playing, fedora-wearing hero Dave Bidini on Sunday, October 6 and they would like you to come.

Dave is a founding member of the acclaimed rock band Rheostatics, and has published several books, mostly on the topics of music and sports. His first book, On a Cold Road, was a CBC Canada Reads finalist.

Dave will have a brand new book out that week and it, along with his others will be for sale thanks to Curiosity House Books.

Dave will take to the stage on Sunday, October 6 at about 2pm. Admission is free and come a bit early so you can enjoy a beer (cash bar raises funds for the hall reno) and something from the meat tray.

For more info contact Bill at hewitt.e@gmail.com
